![]() Focused on cotton and beer - but I built all my breweries in the canal era, which at first i thought was great (developed one away), but then quickly realized that I had no beer for the rail era other than what the merchants had, so my game became a lot trickier. Sweet baby Jesus, just won my first game! What a thrill! I think the main difference in my play today was that I didn't try to make my own network huge (in fact I only built 2 canals!) and instead tried to take advantage of the networks my opponents (3 player game) were building. Generally speaking, more available beer in the rail era favors people going for lots of rail points, and less beer available favors people developing industries. In general, things I see winning players do include getting a lot of iron out in canal without having to build connections, getting multiple high level cotton out in canal, monopolizing the north (around Uttoxeter) with rails, and getting all their beer out by the end of the game.īeer is incredibly cost efficient and worth a lot of points it is hard to win the game if you don't spend effort trying to get as much beer out on the board as possible. There are some engine building elements, but a lot of games are won with relatively low income (7-12 lbs. Lots of people build too much coal and end up with a very high income and nothing to spend it on. The difficulty here is that people will almost certainly not help you make the canal connections to do that easily.ĭon't overdo it on coal. Pottery I is generally weak to play in canal because it's worth 10 points whether or not you drop it in canal or rail era, but if you can drop both Pottery I and III in canal era, you're in good shape. Developing into cotton II/III in canal is a common and powerful strategy since they will score multiple times. As second player, you can, for example, follow up by dropping a canal/coal (connected to the ironworks), or by developing multiple times.ĭeveloping pays off. As first player, you can guarantee yourself to be the first person to drop an iron in round 2 by either taking a loan or scouting as your first action. Actions are your most precious resource, and you should force other players to build a canal before dropping iron if you can. If you are going to put a canal down for points, try to make it worth at least 5 VPs.ĭon't give anybody free iron if you don't have to in the canal era. The less you lay canals, the more actions you have to develop for more points and economy later. ![]() So you can imagine that dumping out a bag full of these tokens will take you a bit to find and sort them out to put them in the correct place.Try to lay as few canals down as possible in the canal era. There are 29 different spots for these tokes and 4 or so of each specific token goes per spot, in a specific numbered order. Each player gets a board and on these boards you have to place all the industry tokens that you will use throughout the game. The MEAT of the time it takes to set up are the individual player boards. The card setup is rather fast as you just lay down the wild cards in their respective parts, shuffle the main deck and deal cards to each player and place the rest face down in its spot. The setup takes quite a while for this one. The cardboard stock they use for the player board tokens are thick and feel very sturdy. The cards all feel nice and the tokens are of a good quality with some wooden squares for the iron and coal tokens and some wooden beer barrels that are shaped like little barrels. ![]() Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef & Angler’s Cove ExpansionĮxcellent quality components here.Join Join The Fuzzy Llama in his Adventuresįollow me on Twitter My Tweets Recent Posts Enter your email address to follow The Fuzzy and receive notifications of new posts by email.
